On December 7th, there is a rare occultation of Mars by the moon that is visible across most of North America. Mars is at opposition on that night. An opposition occultation does not occur again until 2059. This is a do-not-miss event. Track the weather. It may be necessary to travel to clear weather to see it.

Author's Notes: The moon is waxing and appearing farther eastward each evening. "That bright star" in the southeastern sky after sundown is Jupiter. During the night Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars are strung across the sky. Mars is in the east-northeast, Jupiter in the south, and Saturn in the southwest.
