Chart Caption – 2025, September 5: The moon sweeps eastward in front of Sagittarius and Capricornus after sunset.

During the first week of September, the moon climbs through Sagittarius into Capricornus, growing from a bright gibbous to nearly full. Look an hour after sundown in the southern sky to follow its nightly pairing with bright stars.

  • September 1:The 76% illuminated moon is low in the south, near the Teapot’s spout. It stands 2.0° from Alnasl and less than 10° from Shaula and Lesath, at the Scorpion’s tail. A binocular sweep highlights the Teapot’s region.
  • September 2: The moon, 86% lit, is slightly higher in the south, 2.3° from Nunki and near the Teapot’s handle.
  • September 3: At 84% illumination, the moon edges east of the Teapot stars, 9.9° from Tau Sagittarii (τ Sgr).
  • September 4:Now 91% lit, the moon is in front of Capricornus, 11.9° from Algedi and 15.7° from Deneb Algedi.
  • September 5: The nearly full moon, 96% illuminated, makes a striking pairing with Deneb Algedi, only 2.2° away. Use a binocular for the best view.

The gibbous moon’s nightly trek carries it from Sagittarius’ Teapot to Capricornus’ bright stars, setting up its approach to full phase later in the month.
