Pink Moon

The season’s first Full moon occurs on the 12th at 7:22 p.m. Central Time when the lunar orb is opposite the sun.  The name refers to the colors of flowers that bloom during spring. This brightest phase occurs near the star Spica, Virgo’s brightest, a celestial milestone that the new season is here.

Here is what to look for at two hours after sundown.

  • April 11: The moon, 99% illuminated and nearly 30° up in the southeast, is 11.0° to Spica’s upper right.

  • April 12: The Full moon, nearly 20° above the southeast horizon, is 1.2° below Spica.  From South America, the moon occults or eclipses the star, the 12th event of 20 that runs through mid-November.
  • April 13: Near the horizon, the bright moon, 99% illuminated, is nearly 13° to Spica’s lower left.

Step outside during the early evening to note the season’s first Full moon, known as the Pink Moon.
